چکیده

Prebiotics beneficially affect the gut microbiome. Bimuno®, a prebiotic supplement containing galactooligosaccharides (GOS), has multiple demonstrated effects. Using short-term colonic incubations, influence of GOS on microbiota three healthy human adults was evaluated. Colonic reactors inoculated with fecal samples were untreated (blank) or supplemented GOS. pH, gas pressure, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), lactic acid, branched SCFAs, ammonium, and microbial community composition evaluated at 0 h, 6 24 48 h. pH decreased pressure increased (+29.01 kPa) treatment versus blank. Total SCFA (+22.4 mM), acetate (+14.1 propionate (+5.5 butyrate (+5.8 mM) higher for than Acetate production highest earlier in experiment, while between h With GOS, acid (+14.4 followed by apparent consumption. Levels SCFAs ammonium low reduced blank (respectively, −2.1 mM −256.0 mg/L). significantly relative abundance Bifidobacterium longum (LDA = 4; p 0.006), absolute Bifidobacteriaceae (p < 0.001), Lactobacillaceae 0.05), adolescentis 4.5; ruminantium (LDA= 3.2; 0.01). This vitro model potential as supplementation resulted beneficial bacteria, SCFA, ammonium.

Short chain fatty acids and colonic health.

Recently, colonic health has been linked to the maintaining overall health status and reducing the risk of diseases by changes in lifestyle. Functional foods, such as "prebiotics" and "probiotics", dietary fibers, and other dietary components that target the colon and affect its environment enhancing short fatty acid (SCFA) production have been at the forefront. The topic of this review is the ...

Short chain fatty acids dilate isolated human colonic resistance arteries.

Colonic biopsy specimens were obtained from patients undergoing surgery for carcinoma of the rectum. Colonic resistance arteries (internal diameter 178-345 microns) were dissected out under the microscope and mounted in a microvascular myograph capable of measuring isometric tension development. Experiments were designed to test compounds trophic to the gastrointestinal tract--namely, glutamine...

Colonic short chain fatty acids mediate je junal growth

Colonic infusion of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) is trophic to rat jejunum and is associated with raised jejunal gastrin concentration. This study examined the hypothesis that the jejunal trophic effects of colonic SCFAs are mediated in part by gastrin. Forty six adult rats underwent caecectomy to reduce endogenous production of SCFA, ileocolonic anastomosis, and placement of a colonic infus...

Colonic fermentation of dietary fibre to short chain fatty acids in patients with adenomatous polyps and colonic cancer.

Short chain (C2-C6) fatty acids are produced in the colon through bacterial fermentation of mainly dietary fibre. Butyrate (C4) possesses antineoplastic effects on human colon carcinoma cells, and epidemiological studies indicate that high fibre diets may reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer. The role of dietary fibre during colorectal carcinogenesis might therefore be related to its ferme...

Fatty Acids: Branched-chain

Branched-chain fatty acids are common constituents of the lipids of bacteria and animals, although they are rarely found in the integral lipids of higher plants. Normally, the fatty acyl chain is saturated and the branch is a methyl-group. However, unsaturated branched-chain fatty acids are found in marine animals, and branches other than methyl may be present in microbial lipids. The most comm...
